Unmanned Attack on United Nations Base in Conflict-Ravaged Sudan Claims Six Peacekeepers

A unmanned attack struck a United Nations logistics base in war-torn Sudan on Saturday, causing the deaths of six UN soldiers, per a declaration.

The incident occurred at a peacekeeping facility in the city of Kadugli, located in the central region of Kordofan.

8 other personnel were hurt in the strike. All the victims are citizens of Bangladesh, serving in the United Nations mission in Abyei.

“Assaults targeting UN peacekeepers could be violations of international law under international law,” the statement said, calling for the perpetrators for the “unjustifiable” attack to be brought to justice.

Army Blames Paramilitary Faction

The Sudanese military assigned responsibility for the incident on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a prominent paramilitary group that has been engaged in conflict with the military for power in the country for over 24 months.

The attack “clearly reveals the destructive tactics of the armed faction and its supporters,” the army said in a statement.

Context of the Disputed Region

The resource-abundant Abyei is a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, and the UN mission has been deployed there since 2011, when the south gained its independence from Sudan.

Appeals for an urgent halt to fighting in Sudan were also made to allow “a comprehensive, all-encompassing and Sudanese-owned peace process” to settle the war.

Country Engulfed in Chaos Since 2023

Sudan was thrown into open war in April 2023 when a power struggle between the army and the RSF exploded into full-scale combat in the city of Khartoum and elsewhere the country.

  • The conflict has taken over 40,000 lives, a figure rights groups believe a significant undercount.
  • Recent hostilities has been concentrated in Kordofan, notably since paramilitary forces seized El Fasher.
  • The crisis has wrecked towns and has been marked by horrors, such as mass rape and killings based on ethnicity.
  • These crimes have been called international crimes by international bodies.
  • The situation has also precipitated the globe's most dire humanitarian disaster and pushed parts of the country into starvation.
