One two-month journey through Australia was terminated days after the death of an senior lady who was abandoned by the cruise liner on a remote tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been walking on the tropical location with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but broke off from the party for a pause. The liner departed without her and returned later that day after the crew realised the lady was unaccounted for.

A large-scale rescue mission located her remains the subsequent day.

Authorities are investigating the incident, in coordination with law enforcement and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the cruise operator said that passengers and crew on the Coral Adventurer were told that the continuation of the journey had been terminated due to the "tragic passing and previous mechanical issues".

Via official communication, he added that passengers would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the individuals via private aircraft".

Authorities also published an latest communication, and said they had "issued a notice to the Master" preventing any new passengers from entering the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would visit the ship in Cairns upon its return.

Chronology of Events

The liner originally sailed from Cairns on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the journey at the point of the 80-year-old's demise. Lizard Island was the opening port on the journey.

Passengers on the vessel - who generally pay substantial amounts of currency to take part in the cruise - were taken there for a shore visit with the possibility of walking or snorkelling.

Family Response

The child of the elderly passenger said that her loved ones was "stunned and grieved that the ship left Lizard Island after an organised tour without my parent".

In her statement, she characterized her mother as an "active octogenarian" who was a participant of a walking group.

"Based on limited facts we have been told, it seems that there was a failure of responsibility and common sense," she said.

She further stated that she wished the investigation would be able to determine what "the operator should have performed that might have preserved Mum's being".

"Based on information from the investigators that it was a exceptionally warm day, and mother fell ill on the hill climb," she revealed.

"She was asked her to return, without accompaniment. Then the vessel sailed away, apparently without doing a roll call.

"At some stage in that sequence, or shortly after, mother passed away, alone."

Operator Response

In a statement, the CEO confirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with investigators to aid their inquiry".

He stated that the organization was "very regretful that this has happened" and had provided its total backing to the relatives.

Cruise Industry Standards

The vessel accommodates up to 120 travelers with forty-six staff, according to company information. It was specifically designed to reach distant locations of the Australian shoreline and is equipped with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to transport passengers on day excursions.

Occurrences of this nature are uncommon, and passenger vessels have systems to document which individuals are getting on or disembarking, according to maritime specialists.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] onboard really isn't an option," a specialist commented.

Cruise lines regard these procedures with great importance and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such events from taking place," the expert further stated.

"This seems to be presumably a surprising - and unfortunate - one-off."
